Remember
- Commas and periods always go INSIDE the closing quotation mark when punctuating direct speech in American English.
- Use a comma after the dialogue tag when it comes before the quote, and after the last quoted word when the tag follows.
- Keep the question mark or exclamation mark inside the closing quote if the quoted words themselves form the question or exclamation.
