Grade 8 Grammar Worksheets

Eighth grade grammar is editing. Sheets present multi-clause sentences wrong in more than one way and ask the student to say which rule applies as well as to fix it, which is the standard middle school writing is assessed against.

Eight printable grade 8 grammar worksheets, 160 questions across six skills. Every sheet prints a rule reminder above the questions and its answer key on a separate page, and none of them needs an account.

What a grade 8 sheet asks for

20 questions per sheet, with the answer key on a separate page.

What is on this page

Eight sheets on this page were written for grade 8 specifically. Sheets for the grade either side are linked separately under Nearby grades and are not counted here. The skills covered, largest first, are Pronoun Usage (2), Subject-Verb Agreement (2), Parts of Speech (1), Comma Rules (1), Punctuation (1) and Sentence Structure (1).

Between them the grade 8 sheets come to 160 questions across four question types: 8 × identify, 8 × multiple choice, 8 × rewrite and 8 × write your own. 128 ruled lines are printed between them, and that count decides how long a sheet takes far more than the question count does.

The topics a grade 8 sheet covers

Eight distinct topics are covered at grade 8: colons, commas with nonrestrictive clauses, complex sentences, indefinite pronouns, inverted and tricky subjects, mixed parts of speech review, pronouns in compound subjects and objects and reflexive pronouns. Each has its own sheet, its own rule box and its own answer key, so none of them is a variation on the one above it.

How a grade 8 sheet asks its questions

Grade 8 sits in the 6-8 band, which this site calls analysis work. Complex analysis. The student works with multi-clause sentences, distinguishes cases that look alike, repairs writing that is wrong in more than one way, and states which rule applies and why.

24 rule statements are printed across the grade 8 sheets, in a box above the questions rather than assumed from a lesson last week — so a sheet tests whether the rule can be applied, not whether it was remembered. Altogether a student reads about 3463 words to work through everything on this page.

Sentences of 12 to 22 words with subordinate clauses and embedded phrases, and vocabulary a 11 to 14 year old meets in academic reading. That is the reading level these sheets are written to, and it is worth checking against a particular class before printing a set: a sheet pitched right on the grammar and wrong on the reading fails the same child either way.
