Capitalizing Titles of Works and People — Grade 7

Practice identifying and correcting capital letters in titles of books, films, and songs, and in official titles before a person's name, for Grade 7.

Knowing when to use a capital letter in a title is one of the most practical writing skills a seventh grader can develop, because titles appear in nearly every essay, book report, and research project. This worksheet focuses on two related rules: which words inside a title of a book, film, or song deserve a capital, and when a person's official title — such as Mayor, Professor, or Captain — should be capitalized before a name. Students begin by identifying errors, then fill in missing titles, correct flawed sentences, and finally write their own examples. Working through all four sections in order will help students move from recognizing the rule to applying it confidently in their own writing.

This worksheet covers two capitalization rules: how to capitalize titles of works and when to capitalize a person's title before their name.

Remember

  • In a title, capitalize the first and last words, and all major words — nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns.
  • In a title, do NOT capitalize articles (a, an, the), short prepositions (of, in, on), or short conjunctions unless they are first or last.
  • Capitalize a person's title, such as Mayor, Doctor, or Professor, when it appears directly before the person's name: Mayor Cruz.

  • A student is ready to move on when they can correctly capitalize an unfamiliar title they have not seen before on their first attempt.
