Commas in a Series Practice Worksheet — Grade 4
Grade 4 worksheet on commas in a series: students identify, fill in, and rewrite sentences that list three or more items, including the serial comma.
When writers list three or more items in a row, commas do the important job of keeping each item clear and separate. Without them, a reader can stumble — or even misread which items belong together. This worksheet gives Grade 4 students targeted practice with the commas-in-a-series rule, including the serial comma that goes before the final 'and.' Students begin by identifying listed items in correctly punctuated sentences, then move to completing sentences where a comma and 'and' are missing. Next they rewrite sentences that leave all the commas out, and finally they compose their own sentence using the rule. Work through the parts in order, since each section builds on the skill practiced before it.

Notes for the grown-up
- Students most often skip the comma before 'and' at the end of a list — watch for this error across all four sections.
- If a student omits commas, read the list aloud and pause at each spot to show where the reader needs a brief stop.
- A student is ready to move on when they place all series commas correctly, including the serial comma, in their own writing.
