Identifying Adjectives and the Nouns They Describe — Grade 5

Grade 5 worksheet where students identify adjectives in sentences, name the noun each one describes, and correct common adjective errors in context.

Adjectives give writing its color and precision. When students can spot an adjective and name exactly which noun it describes, they read more critically and write more clearly. This Grade 5 worksheet moves through four stages: recognizing adjectives in sentences, choosing the right adjective form, correcting common mistakes such as double comparatives and adjective-adverb mix-ups, and composing an original sentence. Print the sheet and have students work through each section in order. Encourage them to circle adjectives and draw arrows to the nouns those adjectives describe — a visual habit that builds the skill quickly. The included answer key lets parents and teachers give immediate, accurate feedback.

Identifying Adjectives and the Nouns They Describe — Grade 5

Read each section's directions carefully. Complete all four parts to practice finding and using adjectives.

Remember

  • An adjective describes a noun or pronoun. It tells which one, what kind, or how many. Example: The tall tree.
  • An adjective can come before the noun it describes, or after a linking verb like is, was, feels, looks, or seems.
  • Use -er (not 'more -er') to compare two things, and -est (not 'most -est') to compare three or more. Example: taller, tallest.

What this worksheet teaches

  • Identify adjectives in a sentence and name the noun each one describes.
  • Choose the correct adjective form from three options using context clues.
  • Rewrite sentences to fix adjective errors, including double comparatives.

Notes for the grown-up

  • Students often confuse adjectives with adverbs; watch for errors like 'she felt nervously' instead of 'she felt nervous'.
  • When correcting, ask: what noun does this word describe? If it describes a noun, it is an adjective, not an adverb.
  • A student is ready to move on when they can identify the adjective AND name its noun without prompting in unfamiliar sentences.
