Finding Nouns in Sentences Worksheet — Grade 1
Grade 1 students identify nouns in short sentences about animals and school, then sort single words as nouns or not, building early writing skills.
This worksheet gives Grade 1 students focused practice with one of the most important grammar concepts they will meet: the noun. Nouns are the naming words that anchor every sentence — without them, writing has no subject and no meaning. Students begin by reading short, familiar sentences about animals, food, and family, circling every noun they find. In the second part, they move to word-level thinking, sorting single words into two clear groups: noun or not a noun. Switching between these two tasks helps children build a reliable check they can apply on their own: does this word name a person, place, or thing? Print the sheet, read the rule box together first, and use the answer key to review any mistakes.
Finding Nouns in Sentences Worksheet — Grade 1
This worksheet is all about nouns. Read each sentence carefully, then follow the directions for each part.
Remember
- Every noun is a naming word — it tells you about a person, place, or thing. Examples: pond, teacher, Liam.
- To find a noun, ask: who or what is the sentence about? That naming word is the noun.
- Not all words are nouns. Swim and fast are not nouns — they do not name a person, place, or thing.
Part A — Find the Nouns
Circle all the nouns in each sentence.

The fish swims in the pond.

What is on the page
Part B — Sort the Words sorts each item into “Noun” and “Not a Noun”; “teacher” goes under “Noun”.
The language it drills
“The rain falls on the grass.” carries two answers: “rain” and “grass”.
Notes for the grown-up
- Students often mark describing words like big or fast as nouns — remind them a noun names a thing, not how it looks or moves.
- If a child is stuck, ask them to point to the word: can you see it, touch it, or meet it? If yes, it is likely a noun.
- When a student sorts five new words into noun or not-a-noun without help, they are ready to move on to proper nouns.
