Recognizing Pronouns and the Words They Replace — Grade 1
Grade 1 pronouns worksheet where students circle pronouns in short sentences and sort words as pronouns or not, building early word-recognition skills.
Pronouns are among the most common words in the English language, and learning to spot them early gives young readers and writers a strong foundation. This worksheet focuses on one clear skill: recognizing a pronoun and understanding that it stands in for a noun — a naming word. In Part A, students circle the pronoun hiding inside each short sentence. In Part B, they look at individual words and decide whether each one is a pronoun or not. Both tasks require only recognition, which is exactly where Grade 1 learners should start. Print the sheet single-sided, read the rule box aloud together before beginning, and let students work at their own pace before reviewing answers as a group.

Notes for the grown-up
- Students often confuse pronouns with nouns — watch for children circling the noun instead of the pronoun.
- Point to the pronoun and ask: what naming word does this word replace? That check builds real understanding.
- A student is ready to move on when they can name the noun a pronoun replaces without any prompting.
