Pronouns and Antecedents Worksheet — Grade 1
Grade 1 students identify pronoun-antecedent pairs in short sentences and fill in the correct pronoun to match a noun in number and gender.
Pronouns make writing flow by replacing nouns we have already named. When a reader sees he or she, they look back to find which noun it stands for — that noun is the antecedent. Grade 1 students who can spot this connection early will avoid confusing pronoun use later on. This worksheet gives beginning readers two kinds of practice. In Part A, students circle the pronoun and underline its antecedent in short, concrete sentences. In Part B, they choose the pronoun that agrees with the noun in the sentence. Read the rule box at the top together before starting. After each answer, ask your student to say the noun and pronoun pair aloud — hearing the match reinforces the rule more than marking it on paper alone.
