Collective Nouns and Subject-Verb Agreement — Grade 5

Practice matching verbs to collective noun subjects in Grade 5 sentences, using intervening phrases designed to test the one-unit agreement rule.

When a noun names a group — a team, a flock, a jury — it is called a collective noun. One of the trickiest questions in subject-verb agreement is deciding which verb form belongs with it. In American English, a collective noun usually takes a singular verb because the group is treated as one unit acting together. The challenge grows when a phrase follows the noun: a herd of wild horses can tempt a writer to use 'gallop' because 'horses' is right there. This worksheet helps fifth graders see past that trap. Students will identify collective nouns and their verbs, select the right verb form from choices, correct errors in full sentences, and write a sentence of their own. Use it as a standalone activity or as part of a subject-verb agreement unit.

Work through each part carefully. In every question, a group noun — called a collective noun — is the subject.

Remember

  • A collective noun names a group: team, flock, class, crew, jury. It looks like one thing.
  • When the group acts as one unit, use a singular verb: 'The team wins its game.'
  • Do not be fooled by words between the subject and verb. Find the true subject first.

Notes for the grown-up

  • Students often match the verb to the nearest noun in a phrase like 'a pack of wolves' and write 'wolves chase.'
  • Ask the student to cover the 'of...' phrase and read only the true subject, then choose the verb.
  • A student is ready to advance when they self-correct by asking 'Is the group acting as one?' before answering.
