Singular and Plural Subjects Worksheet — Grade 3

Grade 3 subject-verb agreement practice: identify, complete, and correct sentences using singular and plural subjects and matching verb forms.

This worksheet gives Grade 3 students focused practice with one of the most important building blocks of clear writing: making sure the verb matches its subject. When a subject is singular — one person, animal, or thing — the verb usually ends in -s. When a subject is plural — more than one — the verb does not. Students work through three parts: first they identify the subject and verb in complete sentences, then they choose the missing verb form, and finally they correct sentences where the verb is wrong. The sheet also includes sentences with short phrases between the subject and verb, giving students practice with a common source of confusion before it becomes a habit.

Singular and Plural Subjects Worksheet — Grade 3

Read each sentence carefully and use what you know about subjects and verbs. Follow the directions in each part.

Remember

  • A singular subject (one) takes a verb that ends in -s or -es: The dog barks. She watches.
  • A plural subject (more than one) takes a verb without -s or -es: The dogs bark. They watch.
  • Words between the subject and verb do not change the verb: The books on the shelf belong to us.

Circle the subject and underline the verb in each sentence.

  1. 1.

The cat sleeps on the soft blue blanket every afternoon.

  2. 2.

  3. 3.

Marcos draws a picture of his family in art class.

  3. 7.

The girl with the red backpack ____ on the front steps. (sit)

  4. 8.

  • Choose the correct verb form to complete sentences with singular and plural subjects.
  • Rewrite sentences by correcting subject-verb agreement errors with singular and plural nouns.

What is on the page

In Part C — Fix the Error, “The boys plays soccer in the park every Saturday.” is corrected in the key to “The boys play soccer in the park every Saturday.”

The language it drills

“The children run to the playground after lunch each day.” carries two answers: “children” and “run”.

Notes for the grown-up

  • Students often match the verb to the nearest noun, not the true subject — watch for this with prepositional phrases between subject and verb.
  • When a student picks the wrong verb form, ask: Who is doing this action? Then have them say the subject and verb aloud together.
  • A student is ready to move on when they find the true subject consistently, even with a phrase sitting between subject and verb.
