Grade 2 grammar worksheet for drilling how singular and plural subjects match their verb forms, using identify, fill-blank, and multiple-choice exercises.

This worksheet gives second graders focused practice matching a verb to its subject, one of the earliest subject-verb agreement skills in Grade 2 ELA. In English, a present-tense verb changes its form depending on whether the subject is singular or plural. When the subject is one person, animal, or thing, the verb usually adds -s or -es. When the subject names more than one, the verb keeps its base form. Getting this right early matters because it carries into every sentence a student writes. The three parts on this sheet build on each other. Part A asks students to find and mark both the subject and the verb in a complete sentence. Part B narrows the choice to two printed options. Part C uses multiple choice to reinforce the pattern before independent work begins. Read each sentence aloud with your student to help the rule sink in.

Remember

  • A singular subject (one) goes with a verb that ends in -s: The cat runs fast.
  • A plural subject (more than one) goes with a verb without -s: The cats run fast.

Notes for the grown-up

  • Students often attach -s to the verb when the subject noun already ends in -s, which doubles the error and is hard to hear aloud.
  • Point to the subject, ask 'one or more than one?' then read both verb choices aloud before the student writes anything down.
  • A student is ready to move on when they can explain their verb choice by naming the subject and saying whether it is one or more than one.
