Future Tense With Will and Going To — Grade 5

Practice using will and going to for writing about future events. This Grade 5 worksheet builds identification, error-correction, and sentence-writing skills.

When we write about events that have not happened yet, we use the future tense. In Grade 5, students learn two main ways to signal the future: using will before a base verb and using a form of going to before a base verb. Both patterns are common in school writing, and knowing when each sounds natural helps students communicate more clearly. This worksheet moves from recognition to application. Students begin by finding future tense verb phrases in sentences, then choose the correct form in multiple-choice questions, and finally correct errors before composing an original sentence. That final step shows whether a student can apply the rule independently. A time signal appears in every sentence to help students see how writers anchor future events in time.

Remember

  • Use will + base verb to talk about future events: She will finish her project tonight.
  • Use am, is, or are + going to + base verb for planned events: We are going to test our hypothesis.
  • Always include a time signal such as tomorrow, next week, or this Friday so your reader knows when.

Notes for the grown-up

  • Students often write will went or going to runs — watch for the base verb rule after both will and going to.
