Forming the Past Tense with -ed — Grade 2

When children begin writing their own stories, they need to shift actions into the past reliably. The regular past tense is one of the first verb skills children meet in Grade 2, and the -ed ending is the engine that drives it. But -ed is not always spelled the same way: sometimes you drop the final e, sometimes you double the final consonant, and sometimes you simply add -ed to the base word. This worksheet gives students practice with all three patterns through three kinds of exercises. Part A builds recognition by asking students to find the past tense verb in a sentence.
