Simple Present Tense Verbs Worksheet — Grade 2
Grade 2 students identify, complete, and choose simple present tense verbs, with a close focus on adding -s for a third-person singular subject.
Simple present tense is one of the first verb forms young writers need to control, and one small detail trips many of them up: the -s ending. In English, a verb shifts its form depending on who or what is doing the action. 'The dog barks every morning' needs an -s because the subject is a single animal, while 'The dogs bark every morning' does not. This worksheet gives Grade 2 students three layers of practice — spotting the verb in a sentence, filling a blank with the right form, and choosing between three options. Every sentence uses familiar, concrete vocabulary and includes a time signal such as 'every day' or 'each afternoon,' so students can concentrate on the verb form rather than puzzling over meaning.

Read every sentence carefully. Use what you know about present tense verbs to answer each question.
Remember
- A present tense verb tells what someone does every day or right now.

Notes for the grown-up
- Common error: students drop the -s from third-person singular verbs, writing 'She run' or 'He go' instead of the correct form.
- To correct: point to the subject and ask 'Is this one person or thing?' Then have the student say the verb aloud before writing it.
- Ready to move on: the student applies or drops -s correctly with no prompting across five varied subjects in a row.
