Days, Months, and Holidays Capitalization — Grade 4

Grade 4 practice: identify, correct, and write sentences using the capitalization rule for days, months, and holidays while keeping seasons lowercase.

This worksheet helps Grade 4 students apply one of the most commonly tested capitalization rules: knowing which time-related words need a capital letter and which do not. Days of the week and months of the year are proper nouns, so they are always capitalized. Holiday names like Thanksgiving and Independence Day are also proper nouns and follow the same rule. Seasons, however, are common nouns — spring, summer, autumn, and winter stay lowercase. Students often mix these up because seasons feel as specific as months. The four sections move from finding errors to fixing them to writing original sentences, giving students repeated, varied practice with the rule. Print one copy per student and review the Section D answers together as a class.

Days, Months, and Holidays Capitalization — Grade 4

Read the rule box at the top of the page, then complete each section. Capitalize every word that the rules say should begin with a capital letter.

Remember

  • Capitalize the names of days of the week — Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday always start with a capital letter.
  • Capitalize the names of months and holidays — write April, July, and Memorial Day with a capital first letter.
  • Do NOT capitalize seasons — write spring, summer, autumn, and winter in lowercase, even in the middle of a sentence.

What this worksheet teaches

  • Correct sentences where a day, month, or holiday is written without a capital letter.
  • Write an original sentence that correctly capitalizes a day, month, or holiday name.

What is on the page

In Part C — Fix the sentence, “We planted seeds in the garden on a warm saturday in april.” is corrected in the key to “We planted seeds in the garden on a warm Saturday in April.”

Part D — Write your own gives the prompt “Write a sentence that names a month, a holiday, or a day of the week. Make sure every word that needs a capital letter has one.” and prints a model answer in the key: “My family celebrates Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November.”

The language it drills

“We have swimming lessons on tuesday and thursday afternoons.” carries two answers: “tuesday” and “thursday”.

Notes for the grown-up

  • Students often capitalize seasons by analogy with months — watch for written errors like 'I love the Spring weather.'
  • When a student capitalizes a season, ask: is this the name of a day, month, or holiday? If not, it stays lowercase.
  • A student is ready to move on when they can explain, in their own words, why Summer is wrong but August is right.
